Welcome to Ilia in the Peloponnese
Pirgos is the capital city of the Ilia prefecture. Tourism is mainly found along the beaches of western Peloponnese. In the range of 60% to 70% tour the beaches of Ilia or the western Peloponnese every year and decade. Tourism flourishes in the summer season in hotels in the Kyllini area, and its thermal springs next to the Ionian Islands. Many tourists in the area go to places like Agia Lagana on the Kyllini coast.
Another tourist attraction is Olympia, along with its ancient ruins. The archaeological site of Olympia was the site called the Sacred Grove of the Altis, regarded as belonging to Zeus in which, in historically recorded times, the most famous of Greek sanctuaries was estabilshed.
Olympia, on the banks of the Olfios River is an archeological site rich in the remains of old buildings and history. The games began officially in 776 BC and were held every 4 years though there is evidence that they actually began long before. During the games a truce in any wars or conflicts was declared and athletes competed on the playing field rather then the battlefield.
In spring, temperatures in May can climb to around 20 to 25 °C. Temperatures in the summer can soar over 30 °C (86 °F). Sunny takes over cloudy days. Normal temperature is between the low to mid 30s °C. The only time that the leaves change colors is near winter.
The nearest airport on land is in Kalamata, and from Kyllini, the nearest airport is in the island of Zakynthos which is around 20 km southwest.
OLYMPIA | Olympia, a sanctuary of ancient Greece in Elis, is known for having been the site of the Olympic Games in classical times, comparable in importance to the Pythian Games held in Delphi. Both games were held every Olympiad (i.e. every four years), the Olympic Games dating back possibly further than 776 BC. |
