Welcome to Heraklio on Crete Island
The Prefecture of Heraklion (Iraklion) occupies the central part of the Island of Crete.
Capital city of the Prefecture is the city of Heraklion on the North coast, which is the commercial and communications centre of the island.
The Prefecture located between Psiloritis mountains and the Dikti Mountains is the largest administrative division of Crete. It covers an area of 2,641 square km and a population of approximately 250,000.
The Minoan Palace of Knossos lies at a distance of 5 km from the town centre of Heraklion along the road to Archanes.
The second major Minoan Palace in Crete after Knossos, is the Palace of Phaestos in the fertile plain of Messara. Like Knossos it was the center of religious and economic activities.
AGIA PELAGIA | Agia Pelagia is located 20 km west of Heraklion on the main road to Rethymnon. Agia Pelagia was the site of an ancient Greek city. It is not clear which one it was, but some assume that it was Apollonia, the city that was destroyed by the Kydonians at 171 B.C. |
