Welcome to Chania on Crete Island
The Prefecture of Chania, occupies the western part of the island of Crete. The eparchies of Kydonia, Apokoronas, Kisamos, Selino and Sfakia are the smaller divisions of this area.
The Monasteries of Panagia Odigitria at Gonia, Zoodohos Pigi (Crissopigi), Agia Triada Tzangarolon, Gderneto (or Gouverneto) and Panagia Chrissoskalitisa are here.
Several caves are to be found as well as the famous Samaria Gorge.
Minoan sites have been excavated at Kasteli in the town of Hania, Stylos and Nerokourou, and Minoan burials at Maleme, Phylaki and Stylos.
The most important towns of the historical period in the prefecture of Hania are Aptera, Kydonia, Kisamos, Polyrrhenia, Phalasarna, Elyros, Yrtakina, Lissos, Tarra, Syia, Phoinakas and the Diktynnaion Sanctuary.
Important monuments are the old town of Hania and the fortresses at Kisamos, Gramvousa, Souda, Itzedin, Palaiochora and Frangokastelo.
